Dr. Prendergast has had extensive experience in clinical and academic medicine. He completed a sabbatical in England, visiting six university geriatric programs sponsored by the Veterans Administration and Saint Louis University Hospital. He served as Medical Director of the VA Nursing Home in St. Louis, Missouri for five years, and as Clinical Coordinator of the Geriatric Research and Education Center (GREC), where he taught geriatric medicine to medical residents and provided oversight to a geriatric fellowship program. His research interests include oxidative stress and the impact of free radicals on dementia and cardiac disease; the role of exercise and nutrition as therapeutic modalities for the elderly; and the importance of social networking as a mechanism to combat stress in older adults.
